The 2016 Lexus GS F is an all-new model.

The latest model to join Lexus' high-performance "F" range, the 2016 Lexus GS F extends the automaker's presence in an elite class of rivals. Luxury features, athletic handling and snarling power are hallmarks of "F" cars like the current RC F coupe and the former IS F sedan, cars built to compete with BMW's M3/M4, the Cadillac V-Series and Audi RS models. With the new GS F, Lexus takes aim at larger sport sedans from its German and American competitors.

What Is It?
Think of the 2016 GS F as a version of the midsize GS sedan that has been fed a steady diet of protein shakes and anabolic steroids. This rear-wheel-drive, four-door sedan is only available in one well-appointed trim level and comes standard with most of the features that are optional on lesser models.

The GS F will be powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine rated at 460 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. The only available transmission is an eight-speed automatic, which will route power to the rear wheels only. A standard torque-vectoring differential will allow precise control of power sent to each of the rear wheels, making the GS F feel stable at high speeds and agile at low speeds.

When Is It Available and for How Much?
The GS F should go on sale in the second half of this year. Official pricing hasn't been announced, but expect the GS F to start at around $70,000. That's well south of some of the usual suspects in this group, like the BMW M5, the car that created the super sedan class and remains the only one to still offer a manual transmission, or the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, a 577-hp brute in a tuxedo.

If all-out speed and power is a priority, the forthcoming Cadillac CTS-V, with 640 hp, should have no peer. A more sedate, but no less luxury experience can be had in the Audi S6.
